Young Boy Back
to School
How Liam Gained His Confidence Back to Stand Up to His Bullies
Liam (Not the real name), a bright 17-year-old boy, joined individual therapy with Mohammed Al Zoubi, the youth counsellor at the Glowing Minds, after being constantly bullied.
Liam is a teenager in his senior year of high school. He is a bright student, inclined towards studies. He had an A-grade performance in all his classes, and the teachers never complained about him. However, Liam’s teachers noticed a slight setback in his performance during mid-term. When brought up with the parents, they talked to Liam. When he dismissed it as just the stress of studies, his parents also didn’t make much of it. But when Liam started to skip school, his parents got worried. When they asked Liam, he resorted to random excuses at first. But after they pressured him, he broke down and told his parents he was being bullied at school by his classmates. His parents, clueless about how to help their son, took him to therapy.
During the initial therapy session, it was discovered that Liam was a shy, introverted boy with a handful of friends. Being a single child, he had a sheltered upbringing. His self-confidence started to affect him when his peers picked up on him at school. The bullying also impacted his self-esteem and mental well-being. He started withdrawing socially, stopped going to school, and lost his drive to do anything.
The therapy helped him develop life skills to cope emotionally as well as develop strategies to deal with aggressive people. After addressing the underlying social insecurities, he started working on rebuilding a higher level of self-esteem. By the end, he learned how to deal with confrontational experiences and returned to school.
